new media
study abroad
The New Media faculty-led study abroad program offers students an incredible opportunity to explore the global landscape of new media art and design. Each summer, the program alternates between two dynamic travel routes: London, Paris, and Berlin one year, followed by Brussels, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam the next. Over the course of two immersive weeks, students engage directly with the international art scene, visiting world-class museums, cutting-edge galleries, and working artist studios.
This experience goes beyond just sightseeing—it’s about gaining a deeper understanding of how new media art is evolving on a global scale. Students witness firsthand how artists and designers push the boundaries of technology and creativity in different cultural contexts. Along the way, they build connections, develop new perspectives, and return home with fresh inspiration that informs their own creative practice. Whether exploring avant-garde exhibitions or engaging in discussions with contemporary artists, this program is a transformative journey into the heart of new media.

study abroad exhibitions
After each Study Abroad program, students take their experiences from abroad and transform them into self-directed artworks, reflecting on their travels through creative expression. These works are then showcased in a curated exhibition at the Owen New Media Gallery, giving students a platform to share their perspectives with the UNCA community.
This exhibition isn’t just about displaying art—it’s a chance for students to engage in the full process of exhibition design, from concept to curation. It also provides valuable experience in presenting work in a professional gallery setting, which is essential for building portfolios and resumes. Documenting work in this context strengthens students' ability to apply for future exhibitions, grants, and graduate programs.
Beyond professional development, the show serves as a celebration of creative exploration, bringing together students, faculty, and the wider community to experience the impact of travel through the lens of New Media.
international experience
Each year from June 1-15, a group of New Media students embark on an unforgettable journey through Europe, exploring the world of contemporary digital and media arts in a whole new way. This trip isn’t just about sightseeing—it’s an immersive experience designed to deepen students’ understanding of New Media in an international context.
What makes this trip special is its intentional focus on the arts, with curated visits to cutting-edge galleries, groundbreaking exhibitions, and several world-class art museums. Students will have the rare opportunity to visit artists’ studios, witness live performances, and engage with professionals working at the forefront of media arts.
Beyond the academic and artistic enrichment, this adventure fosters strong connections between peers, creating shared experiences that will inspire creative work long after returning home. By the time they’re back in the U.S., students will have a broader perspective on New Media and its place in the global art landscape.
